June 2011
The Wisconsin Horse Council voted last night to support the development of a comprehensive program to support needs of unwanted horses:
a. Supporting education on responsible breeding and gelding of excess stallions
b. The creation of a hay bank program to assist families that have fallen on temporary hard times
c. The establishment of a horse rescue certification program
d. The establishment of a stress and financial management program for horse owners
e. Support for the reestablishment of horse processing facilities in the US as long as appropriate humane transportation and handling requirements are maintained
The loss of horse processing facilities in the US has resulted in:
- Increased stress on horses and owners
- Substantial reduction in the value of horses
- Increased horse abandonment
- Increased neglect of unwanted horses
- Excess horses for horse adoption programs

December 2010
December 2010 update on what has been going on with the WI State Horse Council. Things have been pretty quiet . There were no meetings in November or December. Before that, the Horse Council had decided to make a few changes within. They have changed their name to just – WI Horse Council – dropping the word State. Also, they have changed their logo. The new one will be released at the Midwest Horse Fair (April 15 – 17, 2011).
District 5 (there are 5 districts within the Horse Council dividing the whole state up in sections) plans on sponsoring a Competitive Trail Horse Challenge this coming year. It will be held on May 21 at WildCat Mountain, off the Yellow Trail. Camping will be available at Moon Ridge (small private campground next to Wildcat) for anyone wishing to camp for the weekend. They are hoping the other 4 Districts will also hold a trail competition in their areas. Then on Sept 17, a final competition will be held for all the top winners of the previous competitions. This is something all Trail riders may like to try!
